Dean B. Ellis Library 90th anniversary
status as Federal Depository Library

The Dean B. Ellis Library at Arkansas State University will celebrate its 90th year as a member of the Federal Depository Library Program.  The public is invited to ASU to help the Library celebrate this important milestone.  The 90th anniversary program is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Monday, September 27, on the third floor of the ASU Library.  Congressman Marion Berry will be the keynote speaker.

As the second oldest federal depository library in Arkansas, the ASU Library stands as the only federal depository library in the northeast Arkansas region.  It is responsible for providing free access to government information for the constituents in Congressman Berry’s 1st Congressional District.

In addition to Congressman Berry‘s keynote address to honor ASU for its role in serving his constituents, Judith C. Russell, Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, will make a special trip from Washington, D.C., to recognize ASU for its 90 years in the Federal Depository Library Program.

Mary Brewer, Documents Coordinator with the Arkansas State Library in Little Rock, will also be at ASU to help the Library celebrate its dual status as both a federal depository library and an Arkansas depository library.  Dr. Les Wyatt, President of Arkansas State University, will introduce Congressman Berry, a long-time supporter of ASU.

Thaddeus H. Caraway is believed to be responsible for the designation of the ASU Library as a federal depository library 90 years ago, during his term as Congressman from Jonesboro in the U.S. House of Representatives.  The Federal Depository Library Program was started by Congress in 1813 to ensure that the American public have local, no-fee access to information published by the U.S. government.

The ASU Library is one of 1,273 depository libraries throughout America that exist to provide access to the government information resources of the federal government, and it is one of 14 federal depository libraries in the state of Arkansas.

The public is invited to a reception immediately following the program, at 11 a.m., on the third floor of the Dean B. Ellis Library at Arkansas State University.
