Garland, senior trumpet Grant Garland, a senior trumpet music major at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, has been designated a finalist in the College Jazz Division of the National Trumpet Competition. Garland is from Corning and will graduate from ASU in August. He is a student of music professor, Richard Jorgensen. Founded in 1992, the National Trumpet Competition is the largest competitive event for young trumpet players in the world. Students age 11 and up are invited to George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., after submitting a qualifying recording to compete in several educational divisions such as middle school, high school, college, jazz, masters, “pro am,” baroque and trumpet ensemble. Cash prizes or professional quality trumpets are awarded to the winners in each division. This year’s competition will be held on March 11-14. Dr. Dennis Edelbrock, adjunct professor of trumpet at George Mason University and a member of the U.S. Army Band established the National Trumpet Competition so that serious trumpet students could perform in a national forum as soloists while also having the chance to hear other students. “Both
the listening and the performing are important, for good players
inevitably learn from each other,” Edelbrock said. The NTC board
of directors and artist faculty include many internationally known trumpet
artists.
