First Faculty Concert set for Sept. 27

The Department of Music at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro will present a Faculty Recital Series featuring Dr. Lauren Schack-Clark with performances by Dr. Daniel Ross, Dr. Dale Clark, Sherry Baker, and the Faculty Brass Quintet at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 27, in the Fowler Center Riceland Hall. 

Members of the ASU Brass Quintet include: Richard Jorgensen and Sherri Fincher, trumpet; Dr. Neale Bartee, trombone, Sherry Baker, horn, and Ed Owen, tuba.

 

Their performance will include:  Prelude and Fugue No. 22 by Bach, and Ballade No. 3,Op. 47 by Chopin performed by Schack-Clark; Rosey Mei-Kuei Lee, (based on a Chinese Folk Song) performed by Ross on Oboe, Clark on Bassoon, and Schack-Clark on Piano; Trio in A minor, Op. 188 for Piano, Oboe and Horn, by Carl Reinecke, performed by Ross on Oboe, Baker on Horn, and Schack-Clark on Piano.  Performances by the ASU Brass Quintet will include Sonata,Saint Mark” by Tomaso Albinoni, Mini Overture by Witold Lutoslawski, Scherzo and Lied by Ludwig Maurer, and Ain’t Misbehavin’ by Fats Waller.

 

Schack-Clark is assistant professor of piano and keyboard activities supervisor at ASU. She performs frequently as a soloist and collaborative artist. Schack-Clark is chair of the Arkansas State Music Teachers Association (ASMTA) Chamber Music and Young Artist Competitions and was recently elected president of the newly forming Delta Music Teachers Association, a local association of ASMTA. 

She is certified in piano and pedagogy through the Music Teachers National Association, and has published in Clavier Magazine. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from Boston University, a Master's in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from Northwestern University, a Graduate Diploma from the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Mass., and a Bachelor of Music Degree from the Hartt School of Music.

 

Ross received his B.M.E. and M.S.E. at ASU and his D.A. from the University of Mississippi. Ross is well-known in the profession for his important research, design and construction of reed gouging machines. 

 

He performs regularly as a soloist with the Forum Sinfonia of Krakow, Poland in the United States, Poland, and throughout central Europe. He has performed and presented classes at numerous International Double Reed Society conventions and also teaches and presents master classes at major music schools throughout the United States.     

 

Clark is adjunct professor of bassoon and music theory at ASU. With his wife, Lauren Schack-Clark, he has performed as the Laurendale Duo throughout the U.S., as well as concert appearances in France and Ireland. His articles have been published in the Double Reed and his compositions, lectures and performances have been presented at conferences of the International Double Reed Society.

 

He earned his B.S. degree in music education from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Master of Music from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and Doctor of Musical Arts from Boston University.  Clark is a former faculty member of Boston Conservatory, Atlantic Union College, and the University of Memphis. His teachers include Gary Echols, Keith McClelland, and Dr. Matthew Ruggiero.

 

The ASU Brass Quintet was organized in 1978 as an outreach organization of the Department of Music at ASU. The group has played concerts for schools in many cities and for many arts organizations throughout Arkansas. It has often performed on public radio stations in Little Rock and Jonesboro, and was a regular part of the Southwestern Bell Chamber Series during the 1980s.

Jorgensen is a charter member of the ASU Brass Quintet and is professor of trumpet at ASU. He is also principal trumpet in the Arkansas Symphony and has been featured as soloist with that group. He has lectured in many schools in Kentucky, Texas and Louisiana and has also served as a judge at the National Trumpet Competition.

Fincher completed her Master of Music degree at ASU last spring. She is also a member of the Pine Bluff Symphony and performs often with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. She is continuing her graduate work at ASU and is also a teaching assistant in the music department.

 

Bartee is also a charter member of the ASU Brass Quintet. He is professor of trombone at ASU and conductor of the University Orchestra. In addition, he is music director of the Delta Symphony Orchestra, which is located in Jonesboro and serves the northeast Arkansas region. In 2003, he toured Russia with a trombone ensemble from the International Trombone Association.

 

Baker is interim instructor of horn at ASU. She is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. She is also a member of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. She replaces Dr. Robin Dauer, associate professor of horn, who is teaching in Thailand during the current academic year.

 

Owen is professor of tuba at ASU and principal tuba in the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. His student tuba ensemble has twice been featured at the International Tuba Euphonium Conference. He has been a featured soloist with both the Delta Symphony and the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra.
