Financial Aid & Scholarship office receives grant for technology The office of Financial Aid and Scholarships at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro received a grant today from MOHELA for $20,326 to fund a technology resource room for financial aid awareness. The technology resource room will be located in the renovated Reng Center which will be completed by the end of the 2005-’06 academic year. The grant funds will be used to purchase computers, printers, and media equipment to assist financial aid and scholarship applicants. Gregory Thornburg, dean of enrollment services at ASU, submitted the grant proposal in 2003 and was notified in March that the proposal had been accepted and would be funded. Terry Finney, client services representative with MOHELA delivered the check to ASU representatives today. An alumnus of ASU, Finney said, “It is a privilege to be able to help students fund their education. This is a great way to help by assisting in giving something back to Arkansas State through MOHELA.” “This is the fifth grant MOHELA has given in Arkansas in the history of the program,” Finney said. MOHELA is a secondary market which services loans from lending institutions. Once the technology resource room is complete, students will be able to use the computers to apply for Pell Grants and student loans on-line during a visit to the office of financial aid & scholarships. Students will also be able to apply for ASU scholarships and conduct scholarship searches for private and corporate-sponsored scholarships. Students can also obtain on-line information concerning student loans and repayment options for those loans. The MOHELA grant funds will also be used to purchase media equipment for ASU staff members to present financial aid awareness programs at area high schools. MOHELA is a non-profit company in St. Louis that provides student loan funding and student loan servicing. Arkansas students who receive services from MOHLEA have student loans through Bank of America, Simmons First National, US Bank, and Arvest Bank.
