11 Students selected to attend
symposium in Washington, D.C

Eleven physical therapy students from the College of Nursing and Health Professions at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro were selected to attend the 9th Biennial Symposium on Minorities, The Medically Underserved & Cancer in Washington, D.C. recently.

The students were: Aaron Howard of Conway, Aaron Thomas and Terrance Chapple, both of North Little Rock; Chastity Ivy of Marked Tree, Nicole Ross, Jackie Jackson and Stevenson Johnson, all of Memphis, Tenn.; Latasha Gause and Alysia Blakely, both of West Helena; and Elham Armah of Jonesboro.

As part of the program, the students met with U.S. Senator Blanche Lincoln to discuss policies of health care and jobs in the Mississippi Delta region.

More than 300 students from across the United States participated, representing some 46 schools. Altogether, there were 1300 participants from research, community advocacy groups, funding organizations and academics to discuss with students the disparities of cancer among minorities and the underserved. Mandatory workshops for student participants were geared in the areas of basic research, behavioral and social sciences research and clinical research.

Students also participated in resume writing and interview techniques as well as applying to graduate school.
