Black History Month continues at ASU
with activities, special guests, programs



Black History Month activities continue at Arkansas State University through lectures, activities, film reviews and guest speakers.

The film "Colin Powell: A Soldier’s Campaign" will be shown Tuesday, Feb. 11, and Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 3:30 p.m. in room 182 of the Museum.

Peter Ascoli will present "The Rosenwald School Building Program in the Rural South: 1913-1931" in room 157 of the Museum on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 4 p.m.

As part of the African-American Independent Film Series, "There was always sun shining some place: Life in the Negro Baseball League," will be shown in room 182 of the Museum on Feb. 18 and 19, at 3:30 p.m.

Guest speaker Elizabeth Eckford will speak in the Reng Center Ballroom at 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 21. Eckford was one of the Little Rock Nine who helped to integrate Little Rock Central High School in 1957.

Area high school juniors will be on campus Saturday, Feb. 22, for "Discover Diversity Through You Day."

"Martin Luther King, Jr.: Leading America to the Promised Land," will continue the African-American Independent Film Series on Feb. 25 and 26, at 3:30 each afternoon. A seminar series featuring African-American minorities in medicine will be in the Dean B. Ellis Library, Room 151, on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 6 p.m.

The month’s activities will close Wednesday, Feb. 26, with the Miss Essence Pageant in Riceland Hall at Fowler Center, 201 Olympic Drive. The pageant will begin at 7 p.m.

Sponsors for the month’s events include Fowler Center, the Black Student Association, Department of Teacher Education, Lecture~Concert Series, Gaston Lecture Series at ASU Mountain Home, Heritage Studies Program, Offices of Diversity and Student Affairs, Student Activities Board, Dr. Lillie Fears and Jackie Gilbert.
