Welcome Week begins Aug. 23, as
94th year at ASU gets underway

As the 94th year for Arkansas State University at Jonesboro gets underway, activities for Welcome Week are announced, beginning Aug. 23 through Aug. 27. Classes begin at ASU- Jonesboro on Aug. 25.

The fifth annual Watering Hole project, sponsored by the ASU Craighead County Alumni Chapter, will be held on student move-in day -- distributing free water to students and their families. Watering Hole will be held from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., on Saturday, Aug. 23, at all ASU residence halls and the Administration Building on campus.

Operation Move-In, sponsored by the Student Activities Board (SAB) and the Student Government Association (SGA), will be held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., also on Aug. 23, as students move into their residence halls across campus. The SAB and SGA will sponsor an outdoor movie, “Matrix Reloaded,” on the lawn of the Dean B. Ellis Library at 9 p.m. the same day.

On Sunday, Aug. 24, Operation Move-In will continue from 1 – 3 p.m. with a scavenger hunt at 5 p.m. on the lawn of the library. Residence Life will sponsor a luau at Twin Towers, beginning at 8 p.m.

During the first day of classes, Aug. 25, the “Back-to-School Bash” will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on the lawn of the library, sponsored by the SAB. In addition, the SAB will feature a hypnotist at the Fowler Center at 8:30 p.m.

A free cook-out for ASU students will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on the library lawn, Tuesday, Aug. 26, sponsored by the SAB and Sodexo. Later in the day, a kickoff meeting for the SAB will be held at 5 p.m. at the ASU Pavilion.

The week concludes on Wednesday, Aug. 27, with the Community and Organizational Fair, where ASU and community businesses, vendors and organizations display their wares and products to ASU students. The fair will be held on the lawn of the ASU library from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. It is sponsored by the SAB.

There are numerous other activities, speakers and dinners planned by the Church of Christ Student Center, the Missionary Baptist Student Fellowship, the Baptist Collegiate Ministries, the Catholic Newman Center, and the Wesley United Methodist Campus Ministry throughout Welcome Week.
