Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to
speak at ASU Wednesday, Nov. 5
Noted environmental
activist and speaker Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., will speak on Wednesday,
November 5, at Arkansas State
University
in Jonesboro. The lecture will be held at 8 p.m. in Riceland Hall at
the Fowler Center, 201 Olympic Dr.
Kennedy, an attorney and university instructor, is a resolute defender
of the environment stemming from a litany of successful legal actions.
He has prosecuted governments and companies for polluting the Hudson
River and Long Island Sound. He has also sued sewage treatment plants
to force compliance with the Clean Water Act.
More than an eco-warrior, Kennedy is also a political activist and
social defender. In 2001, he was sentenced to 30 days in jail for civil
disobedience in Puerto Rico. He was in Viques
taking part in a protest against U.S. Naval bombing exercises that take
place there each year.
Kennedy is the son of the late Robert F. Kennedy, who served as U.S.
Attorney General during the early 1960’s. His father was a Presidential
candidate for the Democratic Party nomination in 1968.
His speech on the environment will be followed by a question and answer
session with the audience and a brief book signing and autograph
session.
Free tickets to the speech will be distributed in the Indian Lounge of
the Reng Center according to a schedule
announced on campus by e-mail.
The lecture is sponsored by the Student Activities Board and the Union
Advisory Board at Arkansas State University. Any questions concerning
the lecture or to check on the status of tickets as they are
distributed, call the Office of Student Involvement at 972-2055.
