Delta Hall to close for repairs,
maintenance during 2003-04

Delta Hall, a residence hall at Arkansas State University, will be closed during the 2003-04 school year in anticipation of major maintenance and repairs, according to Dr. Rick Stripling, vice chancellor for Student Affairs.

"We have been looking at various options, and it is already clear that the needed work cannot be completed before the beginning of the fall term," Stripling explained. "Closing the building for the whole year is more practical because students usually don't want to move at semester break. In the meantime, we will be studying our alternatives."

Patrick Dixon, director of the Residence Life Office, is in the process of notifying students who had reserved a room in Delta Hall that alternative living arrangements have been worked out for the upcoming year. "We regret the inconvenience caused by this interruption in Delta Hall services," Dixon told residents by letter. "However, we prefer to provide you with a comfortable environment."

While getting the building ready for another year, workers discovered mold in the heating and air conditioning system. In order to ensure the residents' safety, Dixon said the university decided to take the building "off line" this year while the situation is remedied. Most recently, the hall has housed students who participate in the Honors College. Those who had reserved space to live in Delta this year will be re-assigned to other residence halls. Upper level Honors students are being offered a single room in Arkansas Hall. First year Honors students will be grouped in double occupancy rooms in Twin Towers (male) or Kays Hall (female). These students also will receive a new room and board contract, which should be returned to confirm acceptance of the alternate living space.

Construction of Delta Hall was authorized in the late 1950s in response to the sharply increasing enrollment at ASU. It is a two-story facility on the south side of Aggie Road, between Twin Towers and Arkansas Hall.
