Daedalus Quartet to perform at ASU
in the 2003-04 Lecture~Concert Series

On Tuesday, Oct. 14, the Daedalus Quartet will perform in the Fine Arts Center Recital Hall, 113 S. Caraway Rd., on the campus of Arkansas State Daedalus Quartet will perform at ASU Oct. 14University in Jonesboro. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m., and admission is free.

(Daedalus, pronounced ded’ - a - lus [Latin. From Greek, Daidalos; literally, The Artful Craftsman.] Mythical Greek inventor, artist, and architect celebrated for creating the art of sculpture, designing the Labyrinth, and above all for regaining his freedom by devising wings that made it possible for him to fly.)

The Daedalus Quartet took flight in the summer of 2000 at the Marlboro Music Festival. In less than two years, they earned their place among America’s outstanding young string quartets, having won the Grand Prize and swept all the special prizes at the 2001 Banff International String Quartet Competition. During the 2002-03 season, the Daedalus Quartet performed coast-to-coast in Canada, including a major series in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Winnipeg and Vancouver, as well as in Japan.

The Quartet has coached with Donald Weilerstein and Peter Salaff of the Cleveland Quartet. The members of the Daedalus Quartet hold degrees from Juilliard, Curtis, the Cleveland Institute and Harvard University.

Brother and sister violinists Kyu-Young Kim and Min-Young Kim, who alternate on first violin, and cellist Raman Ramakrishnan grew up in East Patchogue, Long Island. They met Minneapolis native and violist, Jessica Thompson, at the Marlboro Festival.

Performances in the 2003-04 season will include recitals in New York, Washington, Los Angeles, Providence, R.I., Baltimore, Philadelphia and the Republic of Panama. They will perform Erwin Schulhoff’s Concerto for String Quartet with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and serve as the Ernst Stiefel Quartet in Residence for the Caramoor International Music Festival.

For their program at ASU, Daedalus will perform works by Haydn, Hindemith and Beethoven.

The ASU Lecture~Concert Series presents diverse programs to enrich the cultural life of the campus, community and region. All programs are free and open to the public.
