Museum to open new exhibit,
'Based on a Promise'

In recognition of October as Breast Cancer Awareness month, the Arkansas State University Museum will open the exhibit, “Based on a Promise” Sunday, Sept. 28, from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.

Additional sponsors for the exhibit are The Arkansas Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the ASU College of Nursing and Health Professions.

Remarks will be at 2 p.m. by Jane B. McDaniel, past president of The Arkansas Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Dr. Susan Hanrahan, dean of the College of Nursing and Health Professions at ASU, and Dr. Ruth Hawkins, ASU Museum interim director. The public is invited to the exhibit and to attend the reception.

“Based on a Promise” is the story of breast cancer, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, its Race for the Cure ®, and the Arkansas BreastCare program.

The Komen Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker, after her sister, Susan, died of breast cancer at age 36.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women ages 40-59. Thanks to volunteers and support, The Komen Foundation has raised more than $600 million, and become the largest private funding vehicle of research dedicated solely to breast cancer.

It has become an international organization with a network of volunteers working through local chapters and Race for the Cure ® events in 111 cities throughout the United States. The Arkansas Race for the Cure ® will be held in Little Rock on Saturday, Oct. 4.

During the month of October, the College of Nursing and Health Professions will teach classes to ASU students and other interested parties on how to do breast self-examination. The Komen Foundation recommends young women begin the practice at age 20.

“Based on a Promise” will remain at the ASU Museum through Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004.

There is no admission to the museum. The public is welcome. Museum hours are Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4p.m. Saturday and Sunday hours are 1-5 p.m. For more information, call the museum at (870) 972-2074.
