Lecture~Concert Series presents classical guitarist Lily Afshar Classical guitarist Dr. Lily Afshar will perform Monday, Oct. 6, at 7.30 p.m. at the Fine Arts Center Recital Hall on the campus of Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. Afshar’s performance is the first of eight programs scheduled in the Lecture~Concert Series 2003-04 season. This performance is a joint presentation with the ASU Department of Music. Afshar’s playing has been described by the Washington Post as “remarkable” and “impeccable.” She was one of only 12 international guitarists selected to play in Andres Segovia’s master classes at the University of Southern California, where Segovia predicted that Afshar “will be a beautiful celebrity.” Born in Tehran, Iran, she holds degrees in guitar performance from the Boston Conservatory of Music, the New England Conservatory of Music, and Florida State University. She holds many awards including the 2000 Orville H. Gibson Award for Best Female Classical Guitarist, “Artistic Ambassador” for the United States Information Agency to Africa, and the 2000 Eminent Faculty Award at the University of Memphis. She has recorded several albums for Summit Records including 24 Caprichos de Goya by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Afshar is currently the head of the guitar program at the University of Memphis. The ASU Lecture~Concert Series presents diverse programs to enrich the cultural life of the campus, community and region. All programs are free and open to the public. # # #
