16, 2001 Printmakers Gallery to host ‘Weather’ exhibit by former students The current exhibition in the Fine Arts Center Printmakers Gallery at Arkansas State University explores the theme of "Weather," and will be on display through Friday, April 20. The Fine Arts Center is located on Caraway Road at the Jonesboro campus. Weather affects the way we live every day, providing unlimited possibilities for artists to explore. We try to avoid the inconveniences, disasters, and other unpleasant consequences of weather. Dramatic conflicts develop when weather runs contrary to our needs, our desires, and our abilities to overcome adversity. We cannot live without changes in weather. We work and play wherever we can adapt to precipitation, wind currents, temperature and sunlight. Weather brings the promise of life, but also the threat of death. All forms of life must adapt to changes in weather or become extinct. We have devised elaborate systems to predict and forecast the weather. We accept forecasts with a certain amount of faith, planning and hoping for the best. Weather affects our economy, creating stress and disaster, profits and losses. We struggle to overcome the relentless energy of storms, floods, wind, and sun. We experience uncertainty and panic as well as enjoyment. Artists find subject matter for unlimited sources of drama in weather-related events. This exhibition builds upon those themes. The processes used to create the prints in this exhibition include etching, embossing, digital transfer, drypoint, woodcut, and wood engraving. The exhibition consists of 16 original prints created by former students at Arkansas State University. The artists include Melissa Christiano; Linda Cunningham; Crystal Beasley Durr; Olga Duschl; Paul Hancock; Sharon Herndon; Kayo Hasegawa; Jane Jolly; Hiroko Kajihara; Ann Kilby; Janel Knight; Sarah Sears; Ralph Slatton; and Jane Wilson. All prints in the exhibition are part of the Arkansas Print Club Archive. Established in 1963. The archive contains thousands of original prints by students who have majored in Art at ASU. The Printmakers Gallery is located adjacent to the printmaking studios in the north corridor of the Fine Arts Center. It is dedicated to exhibitions of original prints. The gallery is open to the public in the from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays, and from noon until 5 p.m. most weekends. |
