Visual arts to be featured
during Delta Blues Symposium VII

The visual arts will have a prominent place at Delta Blues Symposium VII: Music and Arts in the Delta, sponsored by the Department of English and Philosophy at Arkansas State University.

The three-day event will begin on Thursday, March 29, and continue through Saturday, March 31. All components of the program are free and open to the public.

On Friday, March 30, at 11 a.m. in Museum 157, Bruce West, professor of art and design at Southwest Missouri State University, will present a lecture and slide show on Delta photography.

West has been photographing the people, architecture, and landscape of the Mississippi River Delta since 1994. His photographs are included in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Mississippi Art Museum, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the St. Louis Art Museum, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art, among others.

West also will direct a workshop for pre-enrolled participants on Saturday, March 31.

The Bradbury Gallery of the Fowler Center will host an exhibit, "Mid-South Watercolorists," as part of the Symposium.

The exhibit will open with a reception at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 29.

Mid-South Watercolorists is a non-profit organization which dates from 1970, when it began with five Little Rock artists. The organization now includes 250 members in 17 states.

Juried membership competitions are held each year at the Arkansas Arts Center, where a nationally recognized juror selects the work to be shown as part of a traveling exhibit. The Symposium exhibit features works from the 29th annual competition.

The exhibit will be on display through April 15.

Other exhibits on the ASU campus that will be in place during the Symposium are "Selections from the ASU Collection: Carroll Cloar" in the Fowler Center’s Bradbury Gallery and "A Delta Era Gone By: Photographs by Nadia Price Bates Strid, 1939-1960s" at the ASU Museum.

In addition to the Department of English and Philosophy, Delta Blues Symposium VII is sponsored by the Convocation of Scholars Program, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Communications, College of Education, Center for Learning Technologies, Department of Art, Delta Studies Center, and Lecture-Concert Series.
