Reader’s theater production will open
Delta Blues Symposium VII

A reader’s theater production will kick off Delta Blues Symposium VII: Music and Arts in the Delta, sponsored by the Department of English and Philosophy at Arkansas State University. The three-day event will begin on Thursday, March 29, and continue through Saturday, March 31. All components of the program are free and open to the public.

"Am I Blue?," a one-act play by Delta dramatist Beth Henley, will be performed in the Blackbox Theater in Fowler Center at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 29.

Directed by Molly Simpson, ASU associate professor of drama, the play is a highly original, off-beat comedy which ranges from hilarity to pathos as it details the chance meeting of a timid college freshman and a precocious teenager who lures him to her ramshackle apartment.

Playwright Henley, born in Jackson, Miss., attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas. While there she wrote "Am I Blue?" in 1973. Simpson notes that the play "samples Beth Henley’s wondrous gift for creating sweet comedy out of Southern eccentricities, as well as her ability to reveal the sad loneliness beneath the spunk."

Henley received the Pulitzer Prize for her first full-length play, "Crimes of the Heart."

Cast members for "Am I Blue?" are Jeff Hamm as John Polk, Brittany Hillyer as Ashbe, Summer Hyde as Hilda, Joe Hypes as Barker, Sheridan Essman as Hooker, Jamie Bosanko as the bum, and Colleen Carr as Clareece.

In addition to the Department of English and Philosophy, Delta Symposium VII is sponsored by the Convocation of Scholars Program, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Communications, College of Education, Center for Learning Technologies, Department of Art, Delta Studies Center, and Lecture-Concert Series.
