Department of Music
to present Spring Choral Concert


The Arkansas State University Department of Music will present its Spring Choral Concert on Tuesday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m., in Riceland Hall at the Fowler Center.

The concert will showcase the University Singers and the Concert Choir.

The University Singers Male and Female Choruses will be directed by Dr. Carmen Scialla and accompanied by Ellen Philpot. The performance will include "O Bone Jesu" by Giovani de Palestrina; "The Promised Land" by Theron Kirk; "Sommerruh" by Robert Schumann; "There is a Garden" by Gordon Binkerd; "A Love Song" by Gustav Holst; "Homeward Bound" by Carl Strommen; "Be Thou My Vision" arranged by Karen Shell; "Alleluia" by Irving Fine; "Die Schwestern" by Johannes Brahms; "I Bought Me a Cat" by Copland/Straker; and "Lux Aeterna" by Isaac Thomas.

A group of unaccompanied part-songs by British composer Edward Elgar and African-American spirituals will be presented by the Concert Choir. Dr. Dale Miller, chair of the department, will conduct the ensemble.

The performance group recently sang with the Polish Chamber Orchestra Forum Sinfonia and in Carnegie Hall last spring. Selections by Elgar include "The Shower," "Love’s Tempest" and "Serenade." The spirituals include "Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel" arranged by Edwin Fissinger; "My God is a Rock" arranged by Robert Shaw, Alice Parker; and "Let Me Fly" arranged and adapted by Robert De Cormier.

The final number of the concert will combine both vocal ensembles to perform a piece written by Scialla, "Praise the Lord, Psalm 146."

Members of the Concert Choir include Lisa Blakely of Fort Smith, Caycee Hennan of Highland, Harmony Fortson of Paragould, Emily Terwilliger of Russellville, and April Gordon of West Helena, soprano I; Meagan Adams, Lisa Gipson, both of Jonesboro, Catie Holiman of Gideon, Mo., soprano II; Heather Honnoll, Audra House, both of Jonesboro, Gina Williams of North Plainfield, N.J., and Oksana Rissoukhina of Moscow, Russia, alto I; Dorothy Hughes of Helena, Hannah Harris of Little Rock, Tonya Butcher of Cushman and Jenny Pham of Maple Grove, Minn., alto II; Jeremy Blackwood of Harrisburg, Marc Sexton of Jonesboro, and Matthew Cureton of Arbyrd, Mo., tenor I; Chas Eubanks, Andy Sullivan, both of Jonesboro, James Darnell of West Helena, tenor II; Alvin Coleman Jr. of Forrest City, Jonathan Snipes of Jonesboro, and Keith Westbrook of Benton, baritone; John T. Hays of Jonesboro, Eli Stancel of Atlanta, Ga., and Jared Rogers of Tulsa, Okla.
