8, 2001 Students to speak on trip, studies in Madrid The Department of Languages at Arkansas State University will host an "ASU Students in Spain," program and reception on Thursday, Oct. 11, at 3 p.m. in the Osage Room of the Reng Center on campus. Dr. Ruth Supko-Owens, assistant professor of Spanish, and 17 students traveled to Madrid, Spain, to study the Spanish language and culture for five weeks in July. Several students and Owens will share their experiences at the program. The students shared a residence hall with students from Spain, Brazil, Poland, and a number of other countries, near the center of Spain's capital city. During weekday mornings, the students attended Spanish classes at Enforex, a large Spanish language school that hosts students from all over the world. In addition to their formal study of the Spanish language at Enforex, the ASU students also had many opportunities to observe and interact with elements of Spanish culture. All 17 students completed the program and earned six ASU credit hours in Spanish, which they are able to use in their respective programs of study. The program was planned jointly by Owens and Barry Emberlin, executive director of International Programs and Services at ASU. Former faculty member Dr. Dianne Brain also accompanied the group for a portion of the five-week program. The students include Jaclyn Schmalz of Charleston; Jennifer Hutchinson of Fort Smith; Dusty Warnix of Hot Springs; Sheila Jordan, Matt Huckaby, Autumn Kersey and Craig Tedder, all of Jonesboro; Kim Wilson of Mountain View; Amanda Sublett of Salem; Kristian Krisell and Brent Butler, both of Stuttgart; Sarah Waltermire of Walnut Ridge; Jessica Hooker of West Helena; Leann Cowan of Wynne; Jeremy Cook, Kansas City, Mo.; Melissa Stephens of Neelyville, Mo.; and Guillaume Bergeret of Annecy, France.
