7, 2002 Department of Theatre prepares for chilling true-crime drama Two young, wealthy intellectuals, Nathan Leopold Jr., son of a multi-millionaire, and Richard Loeb, son of a prominent Chicago business man, set out to commit the perfect murder in 1924. With no apparent motive, they covertly stalked and then brutally bludgeoned and suffocated 14-year-old Bobby Franks to death. Based on the true story,"Never the Sinner" is a depiction of this horrific crime and its subsequent trial. This chilling chronicle intertwines sex and psychology, the criminal system and politics, and unprecedented media coverage and social responsibilities. The play delves deep inside the minds of extraordinarily bright college students who felt compelled to kill. John Logan's "Never the Sinner" was the recipient of the prestigious Joseph Jefferson Award in Chicago for outstanding new play and winner of the 1998 Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Play. Logan's powerful script tells the historical tale with a close personal view of these intense young men in the 1920s. Logan spent 20 years researching and writing the true-crime drama. The first version was produced in 1983 at Northwestern University during his senior year. The play premiered in Chicago in 1985 and opened in London in 1990 at the Playhouse Theatre. The production has also been seen in Australia, South Africa and Germany. Logan's numerous screenplays include "Gladiator," "Crossroads," "Hook," "Mrs. Doubtfire," "Double Jeopardy," "Mission Impossible II," and "RKO 281," which won the 2000 Golden Globe for Best TV Movie.
