President’s Scholar Awards
announced at Honors Luncheon


Dr. Les Wyatt, president of Arkansas State University, today announced winners of the President’s Scholar Award for 2000-2001.

Wyatt presented the awards during the Student Honors Luncheon, an annual event hosted by the university to recognize ASU’s most outstanding graduates. The luncheon is the highlight of Convocation of Scholars.

The award is presented to the graduating senior in each college and independent department who has the highest overall grade point average. Graduates from December 2000 as well as those graduating in May or August of this year were eligible.

Recipients and their respective colleges were Christy Kinard of Grubbs, Agriculture; Amanda Evans of Jonesboro, Arts and Sciences; Elizabeth A. Abbott of Blytheville, Business; Mary Heuer of Harrison, Communications; Catherine Rasberry of Jonesboro, Education; Lesley Mae Wright of Benton, Engineering; Catherine "Cara" Sullivan of Searsport, Maine, Fine Arts; Andrea Adamson of Paragould, Nursing and Health Professions; and Terry Womble of Jonesboro, University College.


Agriculture - Christy M. Kinard


Kinard will graduate in May with an agricultural business degree. President of the Agricultural Business Club, she has served on the General Education Task Force, the Credits and Admissions Committee and the Faculty Achievement Awards Committee. She is a President’s List Student.

She is the daughter of Eugene and Janet Kinard of Newport.

Her academic advisor was Dr. Bert Greenwalt.


Arts and Sciences - Amanda Evans


Evans, who will receive her degree in physics in May, plans to attend graduate school and continue studies in atmospheric sciences. A Sturgis Trustee’s Scholar, she is a President’s List student and a member of the Phi Kappa Phi. She presented research at the conference of the Division of Nuclear Physics, and was a recipient of a SURF/SILO research fellowship.

She is the daughter of Jackie and Diane Evans of Canton, N.C.

Dr. Bruce Johnson was her academic advisor.


Business - Elizabeth A. Abbott


Abbott will receive her degree in business marketing in May and she plans to attend law school at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. While at ASU she was a member of several professional organizations including Beta Gamma Sigma, the highest honor a student in business studies can achieve. She was a President’s List student.

She is the daughter of David and Lou Abbott of Blytheville.

Her academic advisor was Melodie Philhours.


Communications - Mary Heuer


Heuer will graduate in May with a degree in radio-television, she plans to pursue a career in broadcast journalism. A President’s List student, she is a member of Kappa Tau Alpha and Gamma Beta Phi honor societies, and Order of Omega. She was named as Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.

She is the daughter of Jim and Leah Heuer of Harrison.

Her academic advisor was Jim Cathey.


Education - Catherine N. Rasberry


Rasberry, who will graduate in May with a degree in health promotion, will complete her master’s degree in health promotion while on a teaching assistantship at Purdue University in Indiana. A Trustees Scholar, she is the recipient of various other scholarships and awards, and is very active through volunteer civic involvement. She is a member of several honor societies, and was also named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.

She is the daughter of Charles and Rebecca Rasberry of Jonesboro.

Dr. Paul A. Finnicum was her academic advisor.


Engineering - Lesley Mae Wright


Wright will receive her degree in mechanical engineering in May and will pursue her master’s degree in mechanical engineering at Texas A&M University. A President’s List student, she is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society. She served as vice-chair of ASU’s student section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Her parents are Jimmy and Loretta Wright of Benton.

Dr. Paul Sherman served as academic advisor.


Fine Arts - Catherine "Cara" Sullivan

Sullivan, a studio art major, will graduate in May and pursue her graduate degree. She has participated in numerous art exhibitions including the Texas National 2000 Exhibition; and exhibition at the Catalyst Arts Gallery in Belfast, Northern Ireland; and in Connecticut. She served as president for the Art Students’ Union at ASU.

She is the daughter of William Sullivan of Searsport, Maine, and Eleanor Norling of Stockton Springs, Maine.

Her academic advisor was Thomas Chaffee.


Nursing and Health Professions - Andrea Adamson


Adamson, who will also graduate in May with a degree in communication disorders, plans to attend graduate school. A program scholar, she is a member of the National Students Speech, Hearing and Language Association. A volunteer for Disability Services, she was also a President’s List student.

The daughter of David and Vickie Osswald of Paragould

Her academic advisor is Dr. Mike McDaniel.


University College - Terry Womble


Womble graduated Magna Cum Laude in December with a general studies degree. A President’s List student, he was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society and served as secretary of the Physical Therapy Student Association. He presented research at the Arkansas Symposium for Psychology Students in Spring 2000.

His wife is Beth Womble of Jonesboro, and his parents are Bill Womble of Hayti, Mo., and the late Doris Womble.

His academic advisor was Dr. Herman Strickland.

Other outstanding students recognized for excellence and maintaining a 4.0 GPA include Donna M. Haynes of Marmaduke, College of Education; Tara V. Watts of Jonesboro, College of Arts and Sciences; Sarah E. Weaver Henderson of Batesville, College of Business; and Linda L. Martin of Paragould, College of Arts and Sciences. In the case of a tie for highest grade point, the President’s Scholar award goes to the student with the most credit hours.
