Leadership organizations
plan ASU Pride Day celebration

Arkansas State University student leadership organizations are planning this year’s ASU Pride Day celebration for Thursday, Feb. 21.

"Pride Day has been designed in order to promote spirit between students, faculty, alumni and the Jonesboro community," Emily Heern, director of the Student Activities Board Spirit Club, said. "More often than not, spirit is associated with athletics, but the establishment of the Spirit Club was presented with meeting the goal to promote all aspects of an education and social well-being at ASU."

Pride Day will begin at 9 a.m. with judging for the ASU office decorating contests. Offices may pick up entry forms and decoration kits from the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., pride stations will be set up in the Dean B. Ellis Library and Carl R. Reng Center giving students the opportunity to pick up free items such as ASU stickers, can koozies, pennants, t-shirts and hats.

Participants will have the opportunity to turn in their University of Arkansas t-shirts and hats for new ASU apparel. All U of A clothing will be donated to the Fayetteville Goodwill.

The Pride Day Awards Reception, hosted by the ASU Student Government Association, Student Activities Board and the Union Advisory Board, will be from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Alumni Lounge of the Reng Center.

The Princess, Brave and Chief Big Track Awards will be given.

The Princess Award is given to an individual who has influenced ASU students with his or her positive attitude, helpfulness and commitment.

The Brave Award is given to an individual who has served students as a teacher, mentor, adviser or coach by fostering achievement and goal-setting.

The Chief Big Track Award is given to the family or organization that has supported ASU through the donation of time, gift or talent.

Applications for award nominations are now available in the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership.

SGA President Andrea Smalec is scheduled to read the governor’s Pride Day proclamation at the awards ceremony.

Heern encourages everyone to show their school pride and support as the Indians take on Florida International at the Convocation Center that evening at 7 p.m.
