MPA students selected
for federal internships

Arkansas State University graduate students Eric Fort of Arkadelphia and Stacy McHatton of Jonesboro were recently awarded 2001 Presidential Management Internships (PMI), a first forericfort.jpg (111557 bytes) students from ASU, according to Dr. Richard Wang, interim chair of the Department of Political Science.

Fort and McHatton will graduate with their master of public administration (MPA) degree from the Department of Political Science in the College of Arts and Sciences in May and August, respectively.

stacymchatton.jpg (286256 bytes)"The PMI program was established by an executive order in 1977 to attract outstanding individuals to federal service," Wang said. "The interns are drawn from a wide variety of academic disciplines and must demonstrate an interest in, and commitment to, a career in public service."

Eligibility standards require that the student receive a masters or doctoral degree in their chosen field during the application year. Candidates are nominated by their university degree program, and then undergo a rigorous interview process before being selected as PMI finalists.

"This is an exciting opportunity," McHatton, a graduate of Valley View High School, said. "I’ve always wanted to work in the federal government, and this is my chance to get a foothold on a career."

"We are proud of the accomplishments of Stacy and Eric," Dr. Patrick Stewart, director of the MPA program, said. "It reflects the quality of our program and professors and the capability and willingness of our students to take advantage of the opportunities presented to them."

More than 1,700 students were nominated this year, and Fort and McHatton were among the 622 students selected for the program. Fort and McHatton could begin their two-year internships with an agency in the executive branch of the federal government as early as this summer.

Upon completion of the internship they will be eligible for a career as a federal government employee.
