Ed Owen to present
faculty tuba recital


Ed Owen will present a faculty recital Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Arkansas State University Fine Arts Center Recital Hall, located on Caraway Road. Soprano Dr. Arlene Biebesheimer, Dr. Robin Dauer, French horn and assistant professor of music, and Dr. Ellis Julien, professor of music, will accompany Owen in concert.

The program will begin with "New England Reveries" for solo tuba with taped synthesized accompaniment by Neal Corwell; "Three Furies" for solo tuba by James Grant; "Elegy" by Robert Chamberlin; "4' 33" " by John Cage; "Galgenlieder for Soprano and Tuba" by Jan Koetsier; and "Three Dances for Horn and Tuba" by Arthur Frackenpohl.

Owen recently began his second year as instructor of tuba and euphonium at ASU. He currently performs as principal tuba of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and Brass Quintet, as well as the ASU Faculty Brass Quintet.

Prior to his appointment at ASU, he served on the faculties of the University of Southern Mississippi, Ouachita Baptist University and Indiana State University. Under his instruction, his students have won solo and quartet competitions at the local, state and international levels.

An active clinician, Owen has presented numerous master classes and clinics on brass performance and techniques throughout the Midwest and South.

Owen’s upcoming performances include the premier of a new composition for tuba and tape by Dr. Tim Crist, professor of theory and composition at ASU, during the Electronic Music Studio Recital on Monday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.

Owen will also perform with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra on Monday, Oct. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fowler Center.

The free program is open to the public.
