29, 2001 Hikaru Otsubo to perform Butoh dance for Lecture~Concert Series The Lecture~Concert Series at Arkansas State University will host a public program featuring Hikaru Otsubo on Thursday, Sept. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fowler Center Theatre. Otsubo will perform the Japanese dance "Butoh." The dance, which comes from the post war era, is one of the newest forms of art from a culture with rich traditions in the arts. Connecting with the conscious and the unconscious, the dance often resembles a ritual, a reflection of the body about the body. Butoh combines dance, theater, improvisation and influences of Japanese traditional performing arts with German Expressionist dance and performance art to create a unique performing art form that is both controversial and universal in its expression. It has evolved to become an international art form with artists and groups devoted to teaching and performing the dance in East and South-East Asia, North and South America, Europe, New Zealand and Hawaii. Dance festivals have featured performances by Butoh artists since the 1960s, but more recently festivals have been held which are exclusively devoted to Butoh. Otsubo began with the largest Butoh group in Japan in 1981 and became the central dancer within one year. After spending six years as the company’s dance master, he created his own group Kotoh. Otsubo recently won the special Grand Prize of The Jury at the International Festival of Dramatic Arts in Piatr-Neamt, Romania. # # # |
