Online journalism is topic for
panel of media executives

First it was radio, then television . . . the impact of technological developments on the delivery of news has sparked debate for decades. Now the Internet gives new energy to the issue.

Media executives will visit the College of Communications at Arkansas State University next week to discuss that very subject: "Online Journalism: What’s Next?"

The program is one of several activities funded by a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to the Department of Journalism and Printing in the College of Communications at ASU.

Frank Fellone, deputy managing editor of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, will be moderator for the session, which is scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, in the television studio of the Communications Building.

Panelists will be Bruce Oakley, online editor of the Democrat-Gazette; Lance Turner, online editor of Arkansas Business; James Denley, online editor of The Commercial Appeal’s GoMemphis.com; Dina Mason, publisher of Nealink.com; and Steve Crain, managing editor and supervisor of online news content for WMC-TV in Memphis.

The panelists will exchange their perspectives about the convergence of media, technological innovations, and content issues. They also will answer questions from the studio audience.

Broadcasting students will videotape the session for later airing on ASU-TV, channel 63 on the local cable system, and copies of the tape will be distributed to area high school journalism programs.

A reception will follow at the conclusion of the session, about 5:15 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.

The Knight Foundation grant was awarded through the Newspapers-in-Residence program administered by the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication (ASJMC), of which ASU’s College of Communications is a member.

Bonnie Thrasher, instructor in journalism and advisor to The Herald, wrote the grant proposal, which provides for representatives of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette to work with ASU journalism students. ASU is one of only 10 schools nationwide to receive funding for the partnership.

The university values the program because of the educational benefits to journalism students, while the newspaper got involved as a way to contribute to journalism education in Arkansas and to strengthen the relationship with ASU faculty and students.

Activities planned for the grant-funded partnership will center around three major topics: the future for online journalism, computer-assisted reporting, and design of news publications.

Fellone and Oakley visited the campus in October to begin their involvement by meeting with classes and faculty. The grant will support student travel to the Democrat-Gazette offices during the spring semester.
