18, 2001 College of Nursing and Health Professions plans alumni recognition and Homecoming open house The College of Nursing and Health Professions at Arkansas State University will host a homecoming open house Saturday (Sept. 22), from 9:30 until 11 a.m., announced Dr. Susan Hanrahan, dean of the college. Featured this year will be a pancake breakfast and tours of the college from 9:30 until 10:30 with a presentation of the distinguished alumni awards at 10:30. This year's recipients are Elizabeth "Libby" Nix, RN, ET, CDE, CPT of Jonesboro and Angela Shipman, MCD, CCC-SLP of Brookland. The public is invited to attend the open house and the recognition. Nix received her associate’s and bachelor’s degrees in nursing from ASU, and is enrolled in the graduate program in nursing. She has served as a staff nurse in the orthopedic unit at Arkansas Children's Hospital, Little Rock, in labor and delivery at the former Methodist Hospital in Jonesboro, and has provided staff support for HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital, Jonesboro. She is coordinator of the Diabetes Self Management Program at St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center. In addition, Nix provides support and teaching in enterostomal therapy, first aid, CPR, prenatal care, diabetes education and safe sitter instruction. She holds certifications in enterostomal therapy, as a nationally certified diabetes educator and a instructor/trainer for the American Heart Association. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, American Diabetes Association, American Association of Diabetes Educators, Wound Ostomy Continence Society of Nursing and the American Heart Association. Nix also has received the City of Jonesboro Community Service Award and ArNA New Researcher Award. She is a board member for the Arkansas State Diabetes Coalition Council and the NEA Diabetes Council. Nix has two children, Kaily, 7 and Ryan, 5. Angie Shipman received her bachelor's and master's degree in communication disorders from ASU. She has been employed as a speech therapist at NEA Rehabilitation Hospital, Trumann Public Schools and Communi-Care/Pro-Rehab and currently is therapist at Brookland Public Schools and a clinical and academic instructor at ASU. Shipman was a recent recipient of the Paula J. Gober Public School Award presented by the Arkansas Speech/Language/Hearing Association. She is an active member of the Arkansas Speech/Language Hearing Association, the American Speech/Language/Hearing Association and the Regional Association for Communicative Disorders. She has held positions of president elect, president and program planning chair with the latter group. Shipman has completed numerous professional presentations across the state and has been the recipient of a number of educational grants. # # # |
