Department of Theatre to present
true-crime drama ‘Never the Sinner’

The Arkansas State University Department of Theatre will present the true-crime drama "Never the Sinner" in the Drama Theater at Fowler Center, located at 201 Olympic Drive, Wednesday, Feb. 13, through Saturday, Feb. 16, at 7:30 p.m.

On May 21, 1924, two young wealthy intellectuals, Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, set out to commit the perfect crime. With no apparent motive, the affluent Chicago teenagers brutally murdered a 14-year-old boy named Bobby Franks.

Famed defense attorney Clarence Darrow, who would later go on to defend schoolteacher John Thomas Scopes in the notorious 1925 evolution trial in Tennessee, determines to save the pair from hanging. The "crime of the century," as it was labeled, became a national obsession fueled by an unprecedented media frenzy.

The Theatre production of "Never the Sinner" features Michael Miles as Nathan Leopold Jr. and Jared Gann as Richard Loeb. Miles and Gann are both of Jonesboro.

Jamie Bosanko of El Dorado takes on the role of Clarence Darrow; Scott Wooten of Jonesboro will portray Robert Crowe; and the three reporters will be portrayed by Robert Hypes of Jacksonville; Brandi Jones of Jonesboro; and Kevin Spangler of Hot Springs.

The production’s design team is guided by the show’s director, Molly Simpson, professor of theatre arts, and includes scenic designer Bob Simpson, chair of the Department of Theatre Arts; costume designer Donna Meester, assistant professor; and lighting designer Albert J. Juhrend.

Advance tickets can be purchased for $6 at the Central Ticket Office located at the Convocation Center, or by calling 870-972-2781. Tickets may also be purchased at the door for $8.

Due to subject matter, this play is suitable for mature audiences only.
