10, 2001 University to host Self-Study kick-off celebration, Tuesday, April 17 The public is invited to join Arkansas State University students, faculty and staff for a Higher Learning Commission self-study kick-off celebration on Tuesday, April 17, according to Dr. Rick McDaniel, interim vice president of academic affairs. The "Celebration of Academic Excellence" will be from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. on the north side of the Dean B. Ellis Library on the Jonesboro campus. Free food, other refreshments and door prizes will be given away in a fun atmosphere which some are calling an "academic tailgate party." Members of the ASU Committee of the Greater Jonesboro Chamber of Commerce and the Indian Club will be assisting. Arkansas State University’s academic programs are accredited by a number of regional accrediting agencies, including The Higher Learning Commission, a commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, which is based in Chicago. Individual programs must be accredited by specialized accrediting agencies for the respective programs. Accreditation of university programs is crucial to the success of any university and provides a "license" to offer degrees. The process of accreditation is very lengthy, and time and energy intensive, according to McDaniel. The celebration will help inject energy into the process. McDaniel and Dr. John Beineke, dean of the College of Education, are currently serving as co-chairs of a steering committee that meets regularly to guide sub-committees which will collect data for the review. All of the research and preparations will conclude with a site visit to the Jonesboro campus by an HLC accreditation review team in March of 2003. In the event of inclement weather, the celebration will be moved to the Armory, on Aggie Road. |
