4, 2001 Dr. Julie Morrow to present archeological findings from Mississippi River Valley Dr. Julie Morrow, assistant professor of archeology at Arkansas State University, will present archeological findings concerning the first Americans and water craft from the Mississippi River Valley. The presentation, sponsored by the Central Mississippi Valley Archeological Society, will be Tuesday, Oct. 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the ASU Museum, Room 182. Morrow’s slide presentation addresses the potential for fluted-point making groups to have made and used boats around 11,000 radiocarbon years before present using information recorded on fluted points from a large region of the upper and central Mississippi River Valley. Several researchers have suggested the use of water craft during the Early Paleoindian period. In a recent issue of the journal Science, the Iberian peninsula of Europe was hypothesized as the geographical "hearth" of some of the first Americans, despite a vast time gap between that period and the earliest known North American cultures. An update on research involving Anzick Clovis burial assemblage in Park County Montana will also be presented. For more information call Morrow or John Thomas, 870-972-2071. # # # |
