Works by Chicago artist Kathleen McCarthy
to be exhibited at Fine Arts Center Art Gallery

A site-specific installation by Chicago artist Kathleen McCarthy will open with a public reception at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, in the Fine Arts Center Art Gallery at Arkansas State University.

The exhibition is admission-free to the public and will be on view through Oct. 3.

McCarthy received a bachelor of arts from the University of Toledo and a master of fine arts from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She also did graduate study in Islamic Art & Architecture at the American University of Cairo, Egypt.

McCarthy's installations made of fishing line have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States.

Recent one-person exhibitions include projects at DiverseWorks Artspace in Houston, the Chicago Cultural Center, and I-Space Gallery in Chicago. She has also participated in recent group exhibitions at TBA Gallery and ARC Gallery in Chicago; Illinois State University Art Gallery in Normal; SPACES in Cleveland; The Soap Factory in Minneapolis; and Vespermann Gallery in Atlanta, among others.

McCarthy has been awarded recent fellowships from the Illinois Arts Council and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs.

About her current work, McCarthy says: "By creating installations that seem to disappear and reappear, I am inquiring into the nature of the relationship of physical perception to knowledge. The tangible yet invisible quality of these installations suggest the possibility of worlds that lie beyond the current range of our physical senses, but not our imagination or our intuition."

The Fine Arts Center gallery is open from 10 to 4 Monday through Friday. Additional information may be obtained by contacting the Department of Art at 972-3050.
