Legislators to be honored at
Arkansas State University’s Legislative Day

Four members of the Arkansas General Assembly will be honored Saturday during the annual Legislative Day activities at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, announced Dr. Les Wyatt, president.

The four are State Sen. Mike Beebe of Searcy; State Rep. Shane Broadway of Bryant; State Rep. Jerry Allison of Jonesboro; and State Rep. George French of Monticello.

"We will be recognizing these gentlemen for their outstanding service to the people of their respective districts and to the State of Arkansas," Dr. Wyatt said. All four, who happen to be alumni of ASU, will be leaving the Legislature after this year.

All state legislators and their spouses have been invited to a barbecue picnic at the President’s Home on East Nettleton Saturday afternoon. They also will be the university’s guest at the Indians’ football game against Ole Miss, beginning at 6 p.m.

Beebe, who has served in the Senate since 1983, was President Pro Tem during the last session of the Legislature. He represents Prairie County and portions of Lonoke, White and Woodruff Counties. Prior to being elected, he also served as a member of the ASU Board of Trustees. He and his wife, Ginger, have three children.

Broadway, who is completing his third term, also serves as Speaker of the House, the youngest person in the state’s history to do so. He represents a portion of Saline County. Broadway and his wife, Debbie, live in Bryant.

Beebe and Broadway’s election to the top leadership roles was particularly significant for Arkansas State University, because it was the first time in history for ASU alumni to lead their respective houses of the Legislature at the same time.

Allison, who also is completing his third term in the House, serves part of Craighead County. Among his many responsibilities, he is chairman of the House Public Transportation Committee. He and his wife, Joann, have two children.

French, who has represented portions of Desha, Drew, Cleveland and Lincoln Counties for three terms, is co-chairman of the Joint Budget Committee. He and his wife, Jeannie, have two children.
