9, 2001 Larry Ball receives first Dean’s Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award Long-time Arkansas State University faculty member Dr. Larry Ball received the first Dean’s Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award in the College of Arts and Sciences, according to Dr. Linda Pritchard, dean of the college. Pritchard presented the award to Ball recently at an honors banquet held to recognize outstanding achievements in the college. The award will be presented annually at the honors banquet, and is designed to recognize a faculty member "best representing distinguished achievement extending over several years in one or more areas of teaching, research and professional" service. "Dr. Ball has a distinguished record of research, teaching and service to Arkansas State University," Pritchard said. "He began his career here at least twice: once as a student who received his bachelor of arts in history, and then he returned to teach at ASU in 1970. "Self-described as a ‘termite historian,’ he burrows into a wide variety of historical sites including classical antiquity, and he teaches, besides western history courses, classical Mediterranean civilization." He is a prominent historian of the American West, having written five books and numerous scholarly articles. Pritchard also credited Ball, a native of Wynne, as being a major visionary and founding figure in building the visible and highly successful reputation of Arkansas State University in Delta Studies. |
