30, 2001 JET Program offers exchange opportunity to teach English and study in Japan The Office of International Programs at Arkansas State University has announced a new opportunity for recent graduates and area professionals an opportunity to share their knowledge in Japan. The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program is seeking applications from Americans who would like to teach English, according to Dr. Barry Emberlin, director of the International Programs Office. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree by the end of this academic year and show interest in Japan. Those selected will earn 3.6 million yen, or about $31,000 for a year of work, beginning in August of 2002. Job orientation and travel expenses are covered by the JET program. While employed by a host institution in Japan, individuals will teach English in a Japanese public school as an assistant language teacher and participate in other cultural awareness opportunities. "Established in 1987, the JET program has earned a high reputation for its efforts in human and cultural exchanges," Emberlin added.
