Native plant identification workshops Saturday,
Sept. 29, part of Arkansas Vascular Flora Project

The opportunity to learn more about plants native to Arkansas will be available at several locations throughout the state from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 29, conducted by the Arkansas Vascular Flora project.

Members of the Arkansas Vascular Flora Committee will host the half-day workshops to highlight many of the tools and techniques used by botanists to identify plants. The workshops will be held at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro and five other Arkansas cities: Fayetteville, Monticello, Arkadelphia, Conway and Russellville.

Participants will learn how plants are named, how to decipher technical terms, how to identify families of plants, ethical collection techniques, using keys and a hand-lens, and how to press plants for posterity. At ASU, the workshop will be held in the Laboratory Sciences Center, west wing, room 442. The building may be accessed through the lobby of the east wing, on Caraway Road.

The cost is $10 per person; registration will continue until the workshops are full. The program is designed for ages 16 and up, and participants should bring a sack lunch.

Interested persons should contact Dr. Staria Vanderpool in the Department of Biological Sciences at ASU, 972-3082, or by e-mail at svand@astate.edu.

The Arkansas Vascular Flora Project is the first attempt to create a comprehensive book-length, fully illustrated manual about the vascular plants of Arkansas.

"The active involvement of amateur botanists in the project is essential to expanding our knowledge of the flora of Arkansas," said Johnnie Gentry, coordinator for the flora project.

The Vascular Flora of Arkansas Project is a cooperative effort among botanists, both within and outside of Arkansas, and several institutions of higher education, including ASU.
