The Arkansas State University Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships is working with potential students and their families throughout the region to encourage students to apply for federal and/or state aid by the Feb. 15 priority deadline.

ASU financial aid officials are helping to answer questions about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form or different forms of aid, such as publicly or privately funded scholarships, through a series of awareness programs held between Jan.12, and Feb. 11.

The office will host an open house in the Reng Center Ballroom on ASU’s campus, Thursday, Feb. 7, from 2 to 6 p.m. for prospective and currently enrolled ASU students.

"Because state-level budget cuts will affect the availability for student aid in 2002 for the fall incoming freshman class, we’re trying to stress the importance of filing applications early," Gregory Thornburg, director of ASU Student Financial Aid and Scholarships said. "These changes mean more competition for Arkansans since funds are limited."

Approximately 100 parents and students participated in a session at Jonesboro High School recently.

Modeled after an Indiana-based program called "College Goal Sunday," the open house is designed to provide a time for the community to obtain financial aid and scholarships applications and insight into the student aid process. Staff will assist families with the completion of applications. Other student services departments, including the Admissions, Residence Life, Testing, Counseling and Student Services offices will also be present to provide information for services in those areas.
