ASU Theatre to present musical
stage classic, ‘The Fantasticks’

The Arkansas State University Theatre will open the 2002-2003 season on Friday, Oct. 4, with "The Fantasticks," the world’s longest running musical in theatre history.

Opening in New York City on May 3, 1960, and closing Jan. 13, 2002, after 17,162 performances, "The Fantasticks," written by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, has been a favorite of audiences for more than four decades.

The ASU Theatre Production of "The Fantasticks" is under the direction of Molly Simpson, professor of theatre, along with vocal director, Matt Carey, assistant professor of music, and production accompanist, Kerri Turner, instructor of music.

The design staff includes Albert Juhrend, assistant professor of theatre, scenic design; Kelly Schaefer, assistant professor of theatre, costume design; Bob Simpson, professor of theatre, lighting design, and choreography by Mandy Posey, a senior theatre major from Jonesboro.

The cast includes Jared Gann, a senior theatre major from Jonesboro as El Gallo, Emily Terwilliger, a senior vocal music major from Russellville as Luisa, Jonathan Foresythe, a senior public relations major from Hornersville, Mo., as Matt, and Adam Smith, a senior from Brookland will be performing the role of Henry.

Jeff Hamm, a senior theatre major from Cabot, and Joe Hypes, a junior theatre major from Jacksonville, will appear as the fathers, Hucklebee and Bellomy, respectively. The role of Mortimer will be played by Rob Hypes, a junior theatre major from Jacksonville, while Dustin Brown, a junior theatre major from Little Rock, has been cast as The Mute.

Musical accompaniment will be provided by Kerri Turner, piano, Matt Carey, percussion, and Pat Qualls on harp. Ashley Swetnam, a sophomore theatre major from Monette, will be serving as stage manager, assisted by Christen Essary, a junior theatre major from Little Rock.

"The Fantasticks" will be performed at Fowler Center for two weekends opening on Friday, Oct. 4, at 7:30 and running through Sunday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m. Additional performances are scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 9, through Saturday, Oct. 12, at 7:30.

Tickets may be purchased for reserved seating in advance at the ASU Central Box Office in the Convocation Center for $8, by calling 972-ASU1, or online at tickets.astate.edu. Reserved seating tickets (if available) may be purchased at the door on the evening of the performance for $10. Advanced reservations are highly recommended.

This play is suitable for mature audiences. Children under six years old will not be admitted. Please arrive early; latecomers will not be seated until intermission.
