14, 2000 ASU System enrollment reaches 15,303, shows increase of 409 Preliminary, unofficial enrollment figures at Arkansas State University’s various campuses and instructional sites show an overall enrollment increase of more than 400 students, the university announced. System-wide unduplicated headcount enrollment for the fall semester is 15,303, an increase of 409 students over a comparable figure from the previous year, according to Dr. Les Wyatt, president. Enrollment in Jonesboro campus classes, degree centers, distance learning sites and regional programs stands at 10,572, an increase of 143 students compared to a year ago. Full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment is up by 176, an increase of 2.1 percent from a year ago. ASU continues to expand its accessibility by making more credit courses available through off-campus and distance learning programs. Many students in ASU’s traditional service areas are served through ASU programs offered in various communities outside of Jonesboro. Enrollment at the degree centers, distance learning sites, and other off-campus sites is 1,244. ASU operates degree centers at Blytheville, Forrest City, West Memphis and Fort Smith in cooperation with the community colleges in those cities, and at ASU-Beebe and ASU-Mountain Home. This figure also includes the new Paragould site and other communities where ASU offers courses, including by compressed video network. Sister campuses in Beebe and Mountain Home recorded a significant part of the increase in system enrollment. ASU-Beebe, with 2,877 students, is up by 105. ASU-Mountain Home enrolled 1,240 students, an increase of 99 from last year. The ASU-Beebe enrollment includes students in ASU courses at Heber Springs. The campus-by-campus headcounts (with 2000 comparisons in parentheses) are as follows: Jonesboro, 10,572 (10,429); Beebe, 2,877 (2,772); Newport, 614 (552); Mountain Home, 1,240 (1,141). One statistic revealed in the enrollment analysis is that 71 percent of last year’s freshmen returned for their second year. The retention rate increased by six percent over last year, giving the university indication that several initiatives to improve retention are having effect. The enrollment figures also show that 2,959 students are attending ASU for the first time. The number of students enrolled in web-based instruction multiplied by five times, to 329 students. Following a careful analysis to ensure accuracy, the university will submit its official enrollment statistical report to the Department of Higher Education based on the records in effect at the conclusion of the 11th day of classes. # # # |
