to present ‘The Elephant Man’


The Arkansas State University Department of Theatre has announced the cast for the upcoming production of Bernard Pomerance’s "The Elephant Man." This will be the second production of the 2002-03 playbill.

Performances will be Wednesday, Nov. 20, through Saturday, Nov. 23, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Fowler Center’s drama theater.

"The Elephant Man" is based on the life of John Merrick, and was originally presented in London, England, at the Hampstead Theatre. The play was produced on Broadway at the Booth Theatre on April 22, 1979, receiving the Tony Award for Best Broadway play of 1979. The film under the same title was released in 1980 under the direction of David Lynch and received eight Academy Award nominations.

The ASU Theatre production of "The Elephant Man" is under the direction of John O’Connell, assistant professor of theatre. The design staff includes Albert Juhrend, assistant professor of theatre, as scenic and lighting designer, and Kelly Schaefer, assistant professor of theatre, as costume and makeup designer.

The cast and their hometowns include Jared Gann, Jonesboro, as Frederick Treves; Adam K. Smith, Jonesboro, as Carr Gomm; Dustin Brown, Little Rock, as Ross; Joe Hypes, Jacksonville, as John Merrick; Kelly Stafford, Memphis, as Snork and the Belgian Policeman; Grant Morris, Little Rock, as the London Policeman; Carl Heyl, Brookland, as the Man in Brussels Carnival; Matt White, Springdale, as the Conductor;

Rob Hypes, Jacksonville, as Bishop How; Scott Wooten, Jonesboro, as Porter; Jared Wendel, Pine Bluff, as Lord John; Sheridan Essman, Jonesboro, as Mrs. Kendal; Christen Essary, Little Rock, as the Duchess; Tonya Rogers, Springdale, as the Countess; Rachel Earls, Rector, as Princess Alexandra; and Cheyenne Nelson, Jonesboro, as Miss Sandwich and the nurse.

Ashley Patterson of Jonesboro and Ashley Brumett of Jacksonville will portray the roles of the Pinheads. Students Wooten and Summer Allen of Springdale will serve as stage managers.

Tickets may be purchased for reserved seating in advance at the ASU Central Box Office in the Convocation Center for $6, or by calling 870-972-ASU1 (2781), or online at tickets.astate.edu. Reserved seating tickets (if available) may be purchased at the door on the evening of the performance for $8. Advanced reservations are recommended.
