Alumni to be honored at Homecoming festivities Two of Arkansas State University’s outstanding alumni with exemplary achievements will be honored as the 2002 Distinguished Alumni during Homecoming festivities at ASU on Saturday, Oct. 19. The alumni are Larry Brewer of Paragould and Wayne Hartsfield of Searcy. The recognition ceremony will be at halftime of the Indian football game versus North Texas State University. Kickoff is 6 p.m. at Indian Stadium on the ASU campus. This is the ASU Alumni Association’s 19th year to recognize Distinguished Alumni. Selection is based upon professional achievement, community service and service to ASU. The Alumni Association’s board of directors makes the selections from nominations submitted by the public. Biographical information on each recipient follows: Larry L. Brewer Larry L. Brewer received his business administration degree from then Arkansas State College in 1951. He served as president of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at ASC, president of his junior class and was actively involved in the Student Government Association. Upon graduation, Brewer joined his family’s business, the Brewer Brothers Oil Company. His business originated as three small service stations located at the Missouri - Arkansas state line. He soon expanded his venture, building his company to one of the largest independent gasoline marketers in Arkansas. He also entered the liquefied petroleum gas business, used largely in Northeast Arkansas for weed control in cotton crops. He was appointed to the Arkansas State University Board of Trustees in 1968 by Gov. Dale Bumpers and served until 1973. Brewer also attended the University of Missouri and the University of Wyoming. A member of the Arkansas Oil Marketers Association and the Missouri Oil Marketers Association, he served on the Arkansas LP Gas Control Advisory Board. Brewer is a Mason and a member of the Paragould Rotary Club and the Greene County Chamber of Commerce. He served as a Chairman of the Board of First National Bank in Paragould, Corning and Jonesboro for many years. He is a member of the ASU Alumni Association. Larry and his wife Bette live in Paragould. They have one son, Bill Brewer, and two grandchildren. W. Wayne Hartsfield W. Wayne Hartsfield received his bachelor’s degree in agricultural education from Arkansas State College in 1956. He is a past president of the ASU Alumni Association. He was appointed in 1985 by Gov. Bill Clinton to two terms on the ASU Board of Trustees, two years of which he served as chair. Hartsfield serves as chairman of the board for Regions Bank in Searcy. He is a past president of the Arkansas Bankers Association and the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce. He also served for six years on the Federal Reserve Board in Little Rock. Hartsfield is a past president and member of the Searcy Chamber of Commerce, the Searcy Lions Club and the Searcy Industrial Development Commission. He also served on the Arkansas State Board of Education for 17 years, and as chair of the Board of four years. In addition to his tenure on ASU Board of Trustees, he also served as chair of the ASU-Beebe development council. He is a member of the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame and the White County Hospital Board. Hartsfield and his wife Suzy life in Searcy. They have four children, Donna, Rebecca, Julie and Jennifer. # # # |
