Disability Services has many
activities for Awareness Week



Many activities and workshops will be held during Disability Awareness Week at Arkansas State University, Monday through Thursday, March 12-15, according to Dr. Jenifer Rice-Mason, director of disability services at ASU.

The theme this year is "Celebrating disAbility: Creativity, Diversity and Spirit."

The upcoming events at the Jonesboro campus will focus on access for individuals with disabilities and the current status of disability issues.

A workshop with Tommy Walker of Arkansas Relay Services, "Bridging the Communications Gap," will be on Monday, March 12, from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. in the Dean B. Ellis Library audiovisual room 119.

Several activities are scheduled for Tuesday including the workshop presented by Ruth Treadway, "You should hear what they hear: The effective use of an interpreter," which will be from 10 to 11:15 a.m. in the library audiovisual room 119. A student forum will be in the Reng Center Ballroom from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m., and from 2 to 3:15 p.m. a faculty, staff and community forum, "Celebrating disAbilities" will be in the Ballroom.

A screening of the movie "At First Sight" will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Reng Center Ballroom.

A ‘barrier free office’ exhibit will be on display in the Reng Center Ballroom on Thursday, March 15, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Also occurring in the Ballroom during the same time period is the "Celebrating disAbilities: Creativity, Spirit and Diversity" symposium.

A luncheon will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Ballroom. Burton D. Pusch, faculty member at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, will be the guest speaker. He is a featured speaker on disability issues at local, state, regional and national assemblies, including the President’s Committee on Employment of Persons with Disabilities.

Programs will provide educational and professional development training for students, faculty, staff, community and regional business and professional personnel. Participants may obtain Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
