Delta’s Spanish-speaking population
to be focus of College of Communications panel

The panel, "La Delta: Confronting the Challenges of the Growing Spanish-Speaking Population," will be held from 2-3:15 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 6, in the ASU-TV studio, located in the College of Communications Building.

Sponsored by the Race, Gender and Media class in the College of Communications, the panel will focus on what organizations, institutions and businesses in the Arkansas Delta are doing to meet the needs of the growing Spanish-speaking population. Most of this group consists of Mexican immigrants.

Panelists will include Anabella Rodriguez, owner of Las Altenitas, a Mexican food store in Jonesboro; Sis. Elaine Willett, Hispanic Minister for Blessed Sacrament Church, Jonesboro; Ricardo Carvajal, program coordinator for the Global Marketing Support Services-Delta office of the Delta Center for Economic Development at ASU; and Dr. Lillie M. Fears, moderator, and assistant professor of journalism at ASU.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 1999 State Population Estimates, Arkansas ranked first among the top 15 states for percent change of Hispanic population from 1990 to 1999. The Hispanic population grew from 19,876 in 1990 to 53,729 in 1999, which represents an increase of 170 percent.

Nevada ranked second with a 145 percent increase and North Carolina ranked third with a 129 percent increase. Tennessee, the only state surrounding Arkansas that made the top 15 list, ranked sixth with an increase of 105 percent.

The panel is open to the public and will be recorded and aired at later dates on ASU-TV, Channel 63. For more details, contact Dr. Lillie M. Fears at 870-972-3075 or lfears@astate.edu.
