27, 2002 College of Communications’ students recognized for their research Nine students in the College of Communications at Arkansas State University have been recognized for research they completed during the spring and fall semesters of last year. The undergraduate students, who completed their work in a communications research course taught by Dr. Mary Jackson Pitts, have been accepted to present their work at the Southern States Communication Association’s spring convention in Winston Salem, N.C. Two of the Arkansas State University students’ papers, Jessica Newburg of Jacksonville and Brad Fletcher of Trumann, are designated in the undergraduate top 10 of the conference. Newburg will present her research on violence in daytime soap operas, and Fletcher will present his research on sex in prime time television sitcoms. Other students selected to present their work at the convention and their research topics include Jason Brown of Clarendon, blacks and women in magazine advertisements; Amanda Rogers of Hazen, public relations and practitioners’ use of technology; Kira Hamilton of Hot Springs, content analysis of MTV news programming after September 11; Dana Scaife of Jonesboro, product placement on sitcoms; Robert Tabern of Jonesboro, agenda setting through a presidential address to Congress; Trent Foreman of Magnolia, college student’s radio listening habits; and Meghan Hackney of Stuttgart, Internet advertising. The papers went through a blind review process, just as professionally submitted papers are reviewed. Each students’ work was individually reviewed and recognized for the quality of the research. # # # |
