Communiversity to present
An Old Sweet Song at Fowler Center

Arkansas State University’s Communiversity Series will present An Old Sweet Song, a artistic duo from Wisconsin, on Thursday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Riceland Hall at Fowler Center, 201 Olympic Drive.

The duo will present "I'll Be Seeing You: Voices of World War II."

The talented pair includes soprano Juliana Schmidt and Timothy Lutz, pianist and tenor.

The pair dress in authentic costumes and present American popular music of the past intertwined with a script relative to the individual era. Particular attention is paid to historical accuracy and the performance practice of the period.

"I'll Be Seeing You: Voices of World War II" focuses on the lives of ordinary Americans during World War II. Against a backdrop of world war, their worlds are changed forever. Juliana and Timothy portray five characters from all over the United States and from varied backgrounds: a mother who sends her three sons off to war, a B-17 pilot flying bomb raids in Europe, a sailor serving in the South Pacific, an army wife who works in a war plant, and a young GI in combat during the Battle of the Bulge.

The title not only represents the song so popular at the time but also references the optimism of the era -- that the husbands, lovers, sons and friends would return from the war, and that although they were far away, they were present in spirit.

The Communiversity Series is a program of the Reng Student Services Center, bringing outstanding diverse artists to ASU and the Jonesboro community. It was created as part of your standing invitation to students, faculty, staff and the community to broaden their experiences with arts of every kind. When the new Reng Student Services Center is completed, the Communiversity Series will be a mainstay of the events offered in the facility.

The Heartland Arts Fund, a collaborative venture of Arts Midwest, Mid-America Arts Alliance, their member state arts agencies (Arkansas) with primary funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and support from private contributors, partially supports the series.
