2, 2001 Childhood Services to host Early Childhood Education Conference Childhood Services at Arkansas State University will host the 13th annual Early Childhood Education Conference, "Children Under Construction," Monday, Aug. 6 through Wednesday, Aug. 8, at the Carl R. Reng Center on the Jonesboro campus. The conference is sponsored by Childhood Services, the Division of Child Care and Early Childhood Education. Participants will take part in large and small group sessions including celebrating diversity in the classroom; school-age activities/networking; infant/toddler environments; playgrounds that develop the whole child; theme related activities; and maintaining a safe environment for children. Guest presenters for the conference are Connie Garrett, Lynn A. Manfredi/Petitt, Sandra Turner and Stephen Fite. Garrett has taught for a Head Start Inclusion Class in a public school setting, serving as education coordinator and assistant Head Start director. Some of her teaching topics include effective teaching techniques, motivational strategies, language/speech development and storytelling. Manfredi/Petitt is co-author of "Circles of Love: Relationships Between Parents, Providers and Children in Child Care," and has 30 years of direct experience as a teacher, mentor, curriculum specialist and family child care provider. Turner has conducted research on the effects of divorce proceedings on young children while providing daily care for the children, and has been a director of a child care facility. Fite, president of Melody House, recently received a Parents’ Choice Gold Award for his recording of "We’re Just Like Crayons." The composer and performing artist has written songs dealing with subjects such as differences, friendships, emotions and self concept. Participants may stay in University Hall, an air-conditioned residence hall on campus, located near the Reng Center. Check-in at the residence hall will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday. All meals are included in registration fees, beginning with breakfast Monday, concluding with the luncheon Wednesday. Sessions are suited for all child care providers.
