Matthew Carey, Joy Fiala
will perform in faculty voice recital

The Department of Music at Arkansas State University will present a vocal recital featuring Matthew Carey, professor of voice, and pianist Joy Fiala, instructor of music, on Monday, Feb. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Recital Hall, located Caraway Road.

Carey and Fiala will present a program including Robert Schumann’s wonderful song cycle "Liederkreis Opus 39," and as a statement about the ongoing war on terrorism, the "Three Walt Whitman Songs" on the subject of war by composer Kurt Weill. The program will conclude with three fully-staged musical theatre pieces, "Soliloquy" from Carousel, "If Ever I Would Leave You" from Camelot, and "Where is the Life That Late I Led" from Kiss Me Kate. John O’Connell, director and assistant professor of theatre, assisted Carey for this production.

Spanning a career that includes more than 40 roles, Carey has sung with opera companies throughout the United States, including San Diego Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Mississippi Opera, Eugene (Oregon) Opera, Santa Barbara Grand Opera, and the Greensboro Opera Company.

He was a member of the prestigious opera ensemble at the Theater Lübeck in Germany, where his leading roles included Figaro in "The Barber of Seville," Valentin in "Faust," the Father in "Hansel and Gretel," Guglielmo in "Cosi fan tutte" and Wolfram in "Tannhauser."

Carey most recently performed as Victor Velasco in Neil Simon’s "Barefoot in the Park" and played the title role in "The Will Rogers Follies," the summer production by The Foundation of Arts in Jonesboro.

Carey is a member of the voice faculty at Arkansas State University, has performed with the Northeast Arkansas Symphony and is a regularly featured soloist with the choral ensemble at ASU. Carey has performed recitals and given master classes throughout the region including at Rhodes College in Memphis, Ouachita Baptist University, John Brown University, and the University of Arkansas.
