of Caraway Road to be closed for construction on campus Signs to announce the closing of a portion of Caraway Road at Arkansas State University will be placed around campus beginning this week when classes for the fall semester kick off, according to Jennus Burton, vice president for finance and administration. Construction on the new biosciences/biotechnology center is set to begin in October, which is when the road will officially be closed. The center will be located where a parking lot currently sits at the southeast corner of Caraway Road and University Loop East intersection. The road will be closed from the intersection of Caraway Road and University Loop East down to the Fine Arts Building, located across Caraway Road from the Computer Sciences and Math Building. In addition to the street closing, parking changes will also be in effect as students, faculty and staff begin their semester. The large parking lot behind Kays and University residence halls is being divided into two lots -- a large space behind the residence halls and a smaller area on the southwest side on the lot. The larger lot will only be accessible through an entrance on Dean Street, and will be strictly for residence hall residents. A gate will be installed soon and students will use their identification cards for entry. The smaller lot, which has approximately 200 spaces, will be accessible by an entrance on University Loop West, and will be for any student with an ASU parking tag or sticker. Faculty parking slots, designated by green paint, have been added on Aggie Road near the Student Union construction site. The parking lot south of the College of Business is being reconfigured into a reserved lot. The reserved lot is for faculty, staff and students who pay $200 per space annually. For more information on reserve spaces contact the University Police, 972-2093. Additionally, changes have been made to the parking area located south of the Communications and Agriculture buildings. Motorists will access the lot from a west entrance, and no longer use Caraway Road. The re-organized parking area will be open for use Wednesday, Aug. 21. Students, faculty and staff may enjoy free parking in the north parking deck through Tuesday, Sept. 2. No special arrangements are needed, motorists may just pull in and park. This offer does not apply to reserved parking however. The rate beginning Tuesday, Sept. 3, is $1 for 5 hours for permit parking and $1 for 1 hour for visitor parking. Faculty, staff and students may not park in spaces marked "visitor." # # # |
