Fostering retention: ASU and PBS will present a live video teleconference Thursday, Nov. 4, from 12 noon until 2 p.m., on "Campus Collaboration to Foster Retention."  Interested faculty and other interested individuals may view the program in the Choctaw Room of the Reng Center.  Call-in and fax-in question sheets will be available to participants.  For details, see the e-mail which was distributed Oct. 20.

Community Choir opportunity: A Community Choir is being formed to participate with the ASU choir, area high school choirs, and Manhattan Philharmonic Orchestra in their March 19, 2000, performance in New York's famed Carnegie Hall.  ASU faculty and choral alumni, as well as other Jonesboro area singers, are invited to audition on Monday, Oct. 25, 6-8 p.m., in the ASU Choir Room.  Call Dr. Dale Miller, director, at 972-2094 for more information or to schedule an audition time.

Yearbook portraits: A professional photographer will return to campus Monday, Oct. 25, to shoot make-up yearbook pictures for all faculty and staff.  Because of the change to digital images, everyone needs to have a new photograph made this year (the staff cannot use any of the photographs from previous years because they are not digital).  The photographer will be in the Indian Lounge in the Reng Center from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.  Please take time to have a photo made.

Faculty Achievements: Congratulations to these faculty members who have distinguished themselves and their departments for outstanding professional achievements.

  • Congratulations to Dr. Richard Tangeman and Dr. Robert Rossa, Computer Science and Mathematics, who will be primary researchers for two projects sponsored by Acxiom Corp. of Conway.  Tangeman will be investigating data modeling, implementation and other aspects regarding the leading commercial relational database management system, Oracle.  Rossa's research will center on data compression techniques for very large sets of data.  The research is expected to benefit ASU computer science students and Acxiom, which employs several ASU graduates each year in its information technology business.
  • Dr. Cyndy Hendershot, English, has had a book published by The Popular Press at Bowling Green University, titled Paranoia, The Bomb, and 1950s Science Fiction Films.  It is a study of ways in which 1950s science fiction films reflect Americans' fears of nuclear weapons and nuclear war.
  • Dr. Jon Russ, Chemistry, recently had an article accepted for publication in the journal Quaternary International.  The paper describes how biological residues from past lichen activity were used to reconstruct the climate history of southwestern Texas during the past 7,000 years.
