United Way and ASU: The United Way of Greater Jonesboro is dedicated to helping others. Volunteers and staff assess community needs, raise funds, allocate resources and encourage collaborative efforts to build a stronger and healthier community.  The United Way serves 18 agencies; many ASU families have directly benefitted from their services.  Last year, ASU volunteers raised more than $26,000 for United Way.  According to Paula Miles, United Way campaign coordinator for ASU, our goal is to raise $27,500 during this year's campaign.  Anyone who gives $50 or more will be eligible for a parking space marked by a plaque bearing his or her name as a "United Way Hero" ($40 value), a golf bag donated by the Arnold Palmer Golf Bag Company, and many other prizes.  All faculty and staff will receive more information from their area coordinator.  This year's campaign theme is "Put a little love in your heart!"

Faculty Achievements: Congratulations to faculty members who have distinguished themselves and their departments for outstanding professional achievements.

  • Congratulations to Dr. Susan Hanrahan, dean, Nursing and Health Professions, on her recent election to serve a three-year term on the national Board of Directors of the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions.
  • Dr. Mike Panigot, Chemistry, and two of his undergraduate students, Amy Crabb and David Bailey, had a paper accepted for publication by the Proceedings of the 1999 Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference and Space Grant Symposium, held recently in Arkadelphia.  The paper, which also was presented at the conference, is titled "Studies Toward the Preparation of C-Glycoside Dendrimers: Synthesis of a C-Glycoside Dendrimer Core Molecule and Investigations into Protecting Group Manipulation for the Preparation of Further Generations of Dendrimers."
Tailgating with the TribeASU's Office of Alumni Relations is busier than ever this year, drumming up exciting events for football season.  This will be the biggest tailgate party year ever!  Preceding the ASU Indians' Saturday tangle with the Memphis Tigers is the third annual tailgate party sponsored by the ASU Alumni Association, Earwood Contractors and Coca-Cola of Northeast Arkansas.  Tailgating will begin at 4 p.m. at the usual location–on Hollywood, southeast of the Liberty Bowl on the Coca-Cola property.  Barbecue is on the menu–but even better is the news that some lucky ASU Indian fan will win overnight accommodations in Destin, Fla.  Join the fun!  Head to Memphis for Saturday's game.  Drawing for the prize is at 5:30 p.m., and you must be present to win.  The tailgate party on Saturday, Sept. 25, will celebrate ASU's first home game, where the Tribe will take on TCU at Indian Stadium.  Frog legs will be the food special of the day.  Let's support the Indians by bringing our families and friends to fill Indian Stadium.  The tailgate party kicks off at 4 p.m., preceding the 6 p.m. kickoff on the field.  Fun-filled tailgate parties are planned for every game, and Campus News will help keep you posted. GO INDIANS!

KASU Town MeetingKASU-FM will hold a town meeting Tuesday, Sept. 21, at Paragould High School to hear programming concerns of its audience.  Many KASU listeners have expressed interest in meeting the station's personnel to discuss programming, as well as to learn more about how the station operates.  The "town meeting" format, the first in a series of planned meetings, will allow listeners that opportunity.  Paragould resident Tony Brooks will serve as moderator for the meeting, which starts at 7 p.m.  Listeners from Clay, Dunklin, Greene, and Lawrence counties are encouraged to attend and ask questions and offer suggestions regarding KASU programming. KASU-FM, licensed to ASU, has been serving its listeners since 1957.

Intent to graduate cards: Faculty advisers should remind students who plan to graduate in December that the deadline for filing an intent to graduate card is Oct. 1.  Also, the deadline for submitting the approved undergraduate graduation checklist to the Office of the Registrar is Oct. 22.

College algebra tutors soughtFaculty may want to mention to students that college algebra tutors are needed through the Office of Disability Services.  Tutoring jobs paying at least $6 per hour are available for students who have earned a "B" or better in college algebra and/or higher-level math courses.  For more information, interested students should call Disability Services at 972-3964.

Conversation partners enjoy cultural exchangeThe Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) gives each of us an opportunity to help make the world a better place.  Conversation partners are  needed for many international students who chose ASU from among numerous universities they could have attended.  Those who can volunteer even one hour per week to visit with a student from another country are encouraged to call Cathy Cato, 972-2500.
