Concert by Music Composers will
conclude Delta Blues Symposium

Faculty and students from the composition program in Arkansas State University’s Department of Music will close ASU’s "Delta Blues Symposium VIII: The Sacred and the Secular" with a concert of their own work.

The event, during which each composer will comment upon his or her piece, will take place at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, in Riceland Hall of the Fowler Center. Like all Symposium events, it is free and open to the public.

Featured composers will be faculty members Dr. Tom O’Connor, composer of "Blue Musing for Solo Saxophone"; Dr. Tim Crist, two of whose works ("Five Pieces for Piano" and "Blues Elves") will be performed; and Dr. Carmen Scialla.

Four students will also have pieces on the program: Nicole Carroll of Bryant, Matt Cureton of Cash, Nathan Sheffield of Mountain Pine, and Stephen Leslie of Booneville.

According to O’Connor, associate professor of music, "This concert will be a look at current work by young Delta composers. Each composer has his or her own unique take on original concert music, and each is influenced by contemporary trends in society as well as in the world of modern art music."

Regarding the specific content of the program, O’Connor added, "The pieces run the gamut from very traditional musical styles to highly technical innovations in sound design and color. All pieces will have been written within this last year."
