Delta Poet and Fiction Writer to Read and
Conduct Workshops at ASU; participants invited

In conjunction with "Delta Blues Symposium VIII: The Sacred and the Secular," Arkansas State University’s English & Philosophy Department has invited writers Steve Yarbrough and Gordon Osing to read from their work and conduct workshops for writers.

The symposium is scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, April 11-13.

Yarbrough, an award winning fiction writer, will read from his work Friday night. Acclaimed translator and poet Gordon Osing will read with other Delta writers on Friday afternoon.

They will conduct a fiction workshop and poetry workshop, respectively, on Saturday, April 13, from 8:30 to 10:45.

To be eligible for either workshop, participants must pre-enroll by submitting either 10 to 15 pages of fiction or 10 pages of poetry, by Monday, March 4.

Applicants should send name, address, phone number, email address (if available), along with a copy of their manuscript to: Creative Writing Workshops/Delta Symposium Committee, Box 1890, Dept. of English and Philosophy, Arkansas State University, State University, AR 72467-1890. Indicate on the envelope the choice of workshop.

Yarbrough is a professor of creative writing at California State University, Fresno. The author of the novels, "The Oxygen Man" and "Visible Spirits," he has also written three collections of short stories, "Veneer," "Mississippi History" and "Family Men."

A native Mississippian, he earned degrees in English at Ole Miss and an MFA in creative writing from the University of Arkansas. Widely renowned as one of the finest contemporary Southern writers, he has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, and has seen his short stories appear in such prestigious volumes as the Best American Short Stories and the Best American Mystery Stories.

A previous Delta Blues Symposium participant, Lewis Nordan, wrote about Yarbrough’s fiction, "the news of his superior talent needs to be heralded throughout the land that he writes of with such compassion and love."

Osing, also an MFA graduate of the University of Arkansas, founded the creative writing program at the University of Memphis, and is now a professor of English there. Published in journals and magazines ranging from Arkansas Review to The New Yorker and Southern Review, Osing has also authored four collections of poetry, including "Boundary Waters" and "Town Down-River," and his most recent works, "Water Radical" and "The Jazzer and the Loitering Lady."

In addition to his poetry, Osing has translated several works of modern and classical Chinese poetry, and has taught at Chinese universities as a Fulbright Scholar. His poetry evokes worlds as far away as China and as near as the Delta, and with "Water Radical" has written a book, according to poet Miller Williams, "that will come to rank with the best." He now lives in northern Mississippi.

Yarbrough reads at 8 p.m. Friday, April 12, at Fowler Center. Osing, along with other creative writers, reads the same day at 1:30 to 4:45 p.m. at the ASU Museum.

The web site for the 2002 Blues Symposium, http://www.clt.astate.edu/blues/, has the complete schedule and list of participants. Admission to the readings and the workshops is free.
