Dr. John Beineke receives
AGATE Educator Award
Arkansans for Gifted and Talented Education
(AGATE) recently honored the dean of the College of Education at Arkansas
State University by awarding him the AGATE Educator Award.
Dr. John Beineke was selected for the award because of his outstanding
support of gifted and talented education. The presentation was made by
Polly Bakker, AGATE president, at the group’s annual meeting in Hot
Springs.
In less than two years as dean, Beineke has had a profound impact on
gifted education at ASU as well as Northeast Arkansas, Bakker said.
Soon after he arrived at ASU in 1999, Beineke established a Gifted
Education Advisory Council to help him determine what course the program
should take.
"He listened to coordinators, co-op personnel and university
personnel on the council, then went before the university administration
and persuaded them to keep the gifted education course of study at
Arkansas State University," Bakker told the AGATE conference.
Dr. Julie Milligan was appointed to head the gifted, talented and creative
program at ASU. Now the advisory group is assisting her with advancing the
program.
Beineke came to ASU from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, where he served as
associate director of the Kellogg National Leadership Program and program
director in Higher Education and Youth. He also has served as dean of
education at Kennesaw State University in Georgia and the University of
Evansville in Indiana.
